Participate in the 4th & 5th grade plant sale to show your support and help lower the price of the 5th grade Eagle Bluff field trip for every student, as well as to provide scholarships so that ALL 5th graders will be able to attend Eagle Bluff. Last week we had our annual all-school Beatles Sing-a-long in the Kenwood gym. It was so much fun!!!! Ms. Quehl, our music teacher, organizes this with the help of the arts committee. Each grade learned a different Beatles song that they "led" during the sing-a-long. All these great songs were accompanied by an awesome Kenwood Parent/teacher band including guitars, saxaphone, bass, drums, harmonicas and keyboards. The Kenwood Staff all got up to do "Twist & Shout" which the kids loved! 4th Graders played ukeleles during "Yellow Submarine" and the fifth graders played guitars to "Hey Jude." Everyone enjoyed singing "Lucy & The Sky with Diamonds". And Kenwood 5th graders took the lead with being the MC's of the event. This popular event gets even better & better every year. It is a great example of the fun things we do at Kenwood.
Family Activity Night happened on Thursday, November 7th. This popular community building event was one of the most well attending events of the year and includes a free pasta dinner, an all-school barn dance and a scholastic book fair. The PTA provided a delicious FREE dinner in the multi-purpose room — more than 700 people attended. The annual Barn Dance is a culmination of the Roots Traditional Dance residency the PTA provides to all classes at Kenwood. In this residency, the students learn about traditional dance and music from cultures around the world. The artists, teach the students using live music and bring that music to the gym where your children can teach you the dances they have learned. The Barn Dance was hopping and parents and children enjoyed dancing together to the great live band. The Scholastic Book fair raised almost $2500 to purchase books and supplies for the Media Center. Another great event at Kenwood School.
On Wednesday, October 9th, Kenwood School celebrated International Bike/Walk to School Day. Students were encouraged to wear a helmet and bring a lock for their bikes. Students signed the mural by the flag pole on their way in and received stickers that said "I walked" or "I biked". On this beautiful fall day over 100 bikers/scooter-ers and 77 walkers participated and signed the mural. 73 bus riders signed the mural too after participating in a quick activity on the playground when they got off the bus.
Kenwood Curriculum Night will be Thursday, September 12th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Gather in the multi-purpose Room for a Principal's Update on the start of school and Kenwood's Title I Status. Family Volunteers are needed to help with the Kenwood School Garden this summer. If your family would like to take a shift of watering, weeding and harvesting, please contact Kenwood parents Angie Erdrich at firstname.lastname@example.org. Usually two families per week are needed to help out. Watering is welcome twice per day during the super hot weather. Donations are also needed for the garden: vegetables and herb seedling, decorative fencing, bags of organic soil or compost and items for climbing plants like shepard's poles would be great. Thank you for supporting our Kenwood Garden.
The 5th Grade celebration happened on Monday, June 3rd. The ceremony was in the Kenwood gym at 8:00 a.m. followed by a reception outside of the gym Congratulations 5th Graders!

Fourth & 5th Graders at Kenwood School sold plants as a part of a PAY-IT-FORWARD campaign to raise funds for next year's trip to Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center. The extra plants were sold every day last week on the Kenwood School Playground and the few leftovers were donated to the Kenwood School Garden. Thank you for your support!
The annual Kenwood Carnival was on Saturday, May 18th. The whole community was invited. Even though the day started out with rain, the sun eventually came out and there was a huge crowd in attendance. There were great new games this year like the big wheel races and the inflatable twister board as well as old favorites like the fortune telling tent, and the dunk tank. There was lots of great food and fun was had by all. Thank you to all who volunteered! We needed many volunteers to make this event happen and as usual the Kenwood School community stepped up to the plate. Thank you to our Carnival Co-chairs Michelle Smith & Patti Nichols and their team for all of their hard work and dedication.
The Kenwood School Play this year was "Fairy Tale — Bits & Bytes". 4th & 5th grade Kenwood students worked hard and put on a terrific show. The performances on March 26 & 27th were outstanding. The Kenwood plays are a very special part of the school. Thank you to Scott Kohanek for directing this production. Bob Elhai & Ken Brahmstedt for helping with the music and Heidi Nizolek for her hard work on the costumes.
We did it! We raised enough money to keep Full Day Kindergarten for the coming school year (2013-14)! Thank you to our amazing Kenwood Community for valuing the importance of Full Day K. Since 2004, Kenwood families have chosen to keep our school strong by guaranteeing a full day of learning for all new kindergartners. These donations come not only from families with incoming kindergartners but from a pay-it -forward campaign for current Kenwood families. We are now collecting on our pledges. You can donate directly to Achieve Minneapolis at Achieve/Mpls.org, and indicate Kenwood FullDayK as your school. http://www.achievempls.org/donate-now/school-funds
We are so lucky to be a part of a school community where over 350 parents volunteer every year — in a school of 461 students! Participating in school events such as Family Activity Night and the Kenwood Carnival has become much easier this year, thanks to the new on-line software program we are using called Jooners.com. When you receive an e-mail about a volunteer opportunity from email@example.com, you will be able to click on a link to a volunteer sign-up sheet via Jooners. There you can select a volunteer committment and receive a reminder e-mail two days before the event. If you haven't seen one of these e-mails yet, please contact Andrea Bubula at firstname.lastname@example.org to add your e-mail to our volunteer list. As, always, thank you for everything you do for our thriving Kenwood School community!
We have launched a new after school science program with the Science Museum of Minnesota. The topic for this year is Tsunamis, Earthquakes & Volcanos. The students have really enjoyed their sessions. It has been a great experience this year..
